Organizing Against Obamacare: Our Lives and Futures
VIDEO:Dallas AARP Meeting “Taken Over by ‘Mob’ of Seniors” - NRO
Last evening, I dashed off to an organizing meeting of northern Virginians wanting to protest Obamacare and Cap-and-Tax and the other enormities of this administration.
The small core of skilled folks who would do the heavy lifting of putting the protests together appeared, with one exception, to be between 35 and 45. But the likely rank and file — those who would turn out in all weather, tell members of the Congress their stories, make and wave the signs, and articulate their concerns and proposals, were likely 50 and many older.
Even though the gathering was only an organizing event, there was standing room only — 100 plus souls in a room designed for 90.
Their awareness of the danger and the need to act was palpable.
The discussion was spirited and on point - -
- that Obamacare was about power, not how best to structure health-care payments;
- that this was a political battle the president could hardly afford to lose;
- that the pro-Obamacare members of the Virginia delegation would hardly roll over when they were first confronted — but that continuing confrontations were vital;
- that it would be a long battle — and one that even if “won” this year, would have to be fought again and again;
- and that the organized Left behind these intrusive initiatives were deadly serious street-savvy advocates with substantial resources, and a pool of many recent university graduates who had absorbed the tenets of cultural Marxism.
One of the experienced organizers told me today — “We should have had such a group four years ago.” Indeed.
The energy, commitment, and political horse-sense at the gathering were a refreshing contrast to, say, the cheering-section mentality of a too-typical official Virginia Republican gathering. Of course, that is because the meeting was about the very lives and futures of the participants, not the career prospects of incumbents and party hopefuls.
In a time of so many dangers from the Left, these citizens last night lifted one’s spirits. I predict we shall be seeing their good works this August throughout northern Virginia.
