How Soon Will We Follow The Example Of The New German Police State?

Today Judith Bergman (Gatestone Institute) asked whether we are seeing “Germany: Return of the Stasi Police State?”!

  • “Germany’s new law requires social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, to censor their users on behalf of the government. Social media companies are obliged to delete or block any online ‘criminal offenses’ within 24 hours of receipt of a user complaint — regardless of whether the content is accurate or not.”
  • “Social media platforms now have the power to shape the form of current political and cultural discourse by deciding who will speak and what they will say.”
  • “Notice the ease with which the police chief mentioned that he had filed charges to silence a leading political opponent of the government. That is what authorities do in police states: Through censorship and criminal charges, they silence outspoken critics and political opponents of government policies, such as Beatrix von Storch, who has sharply criticized Chancellor Angela Merkel’s migration policies.” (Highlighting added throughout.)

Just last September, we reported (“GOP Fumbles Free Speech”) Breitbart London Editor-in-Chief  Raheem Kassam’s analysis that
The Swamp Just Bounced Trump Into A European-Style Assault on Free Speech”!

“Most important, he reminded readers – – –‘Many Americans don’t seem to appreciate as much as outside admirers do, that the United States is the only country in the world with a commitment to free speech enshrined in the nation’s Constitution. Many nations do not even have codified constitution of which to speak.’”

And this Tuesday magisterial conservative Angelo Codevilla asked (American Greatness) “Can the First Amendment Protect Us from the Ruling Class?”

“‘Congress shall make no law’ restricting the free exercise of religion, freedom of speech, or of association. Aside from Christ’s distinction between duties to God and duties to Caesar, the First Amendment’s words are some of the greatest barriers ever erected against tyranny. But James Madison, who wrote them, warned how easily the ever-present temptation to tyrannize overcomes ‘parchment barriers.'”

Codevilla sums up this grave and fast-growing challenge to our lives —

The class that rules and currently defines our regime long ago despised the First Amendment. Whether we may rescue aspects of it for our protection remains to be seen.
