Is Michael Steele’s Main RNC Job To Be a Talking Head?

UPDATES MARCH 4! The Corner’s Kathryn Jean Lopez on “Michael Steele” here and Andrew McCarthy’s That Steele Interview on CNN Is Really Bad” here.

Is Michael Steele’s Main RNC Job To Be a Talking Head?

As lamentable as the Michael Steele-Rush Limbaugh kerfluffle here has been, nonetheless the controversy opens up the question of what the right role of this Republican National Committee chairman should be.

Here is one of the most salient parts of Rush Limbaugh’s response yesterday
here to Michael Steele’s comments last weekend —

“I hope the RNC chairman will realize he’s not a talking head pundit, that he is supposed to be working on the grassroots and rebuilding it, and maybe doing something about our open primary system and fixing it so that Democrats do not nominate our candidates. It’s time, Mr. Steele, for you to go behind the scenes and start doing the work that you were elected to do instead of trying to be some talking head media star, which you’re having a tough time pulling off. I hope you figure out how to run a primary system.” (Underscoring Forum’s.)

And Michelle Malkin advised Steele here – –

One more thing: When liberals sit there and accuse the GOP convention of looking like ‘Nazi Germany,’ you might not want to sit there, nodding your head, and respond, ‘I agree.’

In our view, the grassroots urgently need to know not just the spending figures of the Obama Stimulus Package and the Obama Mega-Appropriations Package, but the liberty costs and the governmentalizing schemes in these and follow-on Obama measures.

And the grass roots need the resources to get the word out to independents, disaffected Democrats, and estranged Republicans.

Yesterday in our “On ‘Getting Mean’ – Kudlow, Wright Detail The Danger Now  we cited American Thinker’s C. Edmund Wright here on our predicament.  Here is another of Wright’s crucial insights – –

“And this rapidly descending snowball from hell will not be sidetracked if elected leaders of the Republican Party continue to be scared away from attacking Obama because of his approval ratings. Did it ever dawn on these geniuses that perhaps his ratings are high because no one ever attacks him?

Further, on the legislation that has passed and is passing in Congress, it is not sufficient to whimper weakly about ‘pork barrel spending’ and ‘government waste’ and ‘hard working American families’ and so on.  This is all of that, but it is much more. It is a restructuring of an entire economy.

It will wreck the private economy, which will shrivel away.

It must be stopped, and the only way to do that is to point this out.  Period. It is time opposition leaders woke up and dared to do something about it.  It will take bold action and bold, decisive words.

‘Reaching across the aisle’ and the ‘new tone’ will just not do.” (Underscoring Forum’s.)

The good Mr. Steele first needs to find ways to make it clear to the faithful that he fully understands that the Obama Team is the witting enemy of American freedom and prosperity. If Mr. Steele genuinely grasps this, he won’t find Mr. Limbaugh’s rhetoric “incendiary.”

The second thing the RNC chairman should do is quietly but effectively show that his organization will also go right to work with the conservative grass roots to defeat the Obama schemes.
