Hillary: Watering Down Freedom of Speech About Islam?

UPDATE DECEMBER 13! Read all of Nina Shea’s report today (NRO) on what we view as the outrageous conduct of the Department of State in hosting a gathering including the enemies of our freedom yet excluding unapproved American observers and forbidding those allowed to attend from detailing the proceedings discussing our basic liberties. Where are the Congressional investigation panels which should make sure public sunlight shines on these shameful State Department actors and actions ?

One week ago, Nina Shea and Paul Marshall of the Hudson Institute reported in their “The State Department vs. Free Speech: Hillary Clinton Chats Up the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, which demands world-wide bans on criticizing Islam” (Wall Street Journal) that

“Last July in Istanbul, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton co-chaired a ‘High-Level Meeting on Combating Religious Intolerance’ with the Saudi-based Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Mrs. Clinton invited the OIC to Washington for a conference to build ‘muscles of respect and empathy and tolerance.’ That conference is scheduled for Dec. 12 through Dec. 14.

For more than 20 years, the OIC has pressed Western governments to restrict speech about Islam. Its charter commits it ‘to combat defamation of Islam,’ and  its current action plan calls for ‘deterrent punishments’ by all states to counter purported Islamophobia.” (Underscoring  Forum’s.)

We have already seen in Maryland and Virginia efforts to curtail public discussion about the dangers of Political Islam and Shariah.

Republican clubs in northern Virginia cancel scheduled appearances of the Fred Grandys on stealth Shariah. The Left in Montgomery County, Maryland piles on (unsuccessfully) a Republican club that showcases a Grandy appearance, then attacks a statewide conservative conference for its panel of national experts on stealth Shariah. Most recently, the Howard County, Maryland police reportedly see their role as adjudicating a private exchange on Islam in a parking lot between two people. The Republican Party of Virginia has completely lost its voice on the dangers of Shariah in a state where there are a number of Political Islamists.

But how about the future of free political speech across the U.S.?

Last Friday Patrick Goodenough (CNS) warned in his “Obama Administration Welcoming Islamic Group to Washington for Discussion on ‘Tolerance’” —

“The Obama administration says a meeting in Washington next week seeks to make progress in combating religious intolerance, but critics say the U.S. is pandering to an ideological agenda aimed at restricting speech critical of Islam.

According to the State Department the aim is to find ways to combat religious hate without compromising freedom of expression. Detractors are skeptical that this can be done, and they suspect that free speech will end up the loser.

Among those criticizing the event are GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich, the Traditional Values Coalition, and scholars at the Hudson Institute’s Center for Religious Freedom.”

Goodenough adds that “the Traditional Values Coalition has requested permission to be admitted as an observer to next week’s meeting, and says the State Department has so far refused.”

On Saturday, Ann Snyder asked (Legal Project Blog) “Why is the Obama Administration Giving the OIC a Say in Our Right to Free Speech?” —

“It would be a terrible mistake for the United States to take any guidance or input from the OIC on setting—legally, culturally, or otherwise—the acceptable boundaries of freedom of expression here. So open and so notorious has been the OIC’s campaign to impose limitations on speech in the West, that the upcoming meeting cannot credibly pass muster under the guise of diplomacy. Complicity seems a more appropriate term. If that is not the Obama Administration’s position, it should take immediate steps to clarify its policy and to express its commitment to preserving our fundamental and constitutionally protected right to freedom of speech.” (Underscoring Forum’s.)

Readers are encouraged to read the three foregoing articles here, here, and here to understand the potential reach of this Hilary Clinton-facilitated threat to our ancient liberties.

Certainly one of the best public guardians  of these liberties against Shariah in our region has been Representative Frank Wolfboth by belling the Grover Norquist cat and by probing the Islamic Saudi Academy in Fairfax County.

Conservatives need to understand how Political Islam and an uncritical eye toward Shariah have worked their way into the fabric of the GOP and even parts of the conservative movement.

The Gaffney Narrative

Just this morning, fortunately, FrontPageMag.com has published “How the Muslim Brotherhood Infiltrated the GOP,” featuring Frank Gaffney’s talk at David Horowitz’s Restoration Weekend in West Palm Beach, Florida (Nov. 17-20, 2011).

Virginia readers in particular will find much of interest in Reagan defense aide Gaffney’s talk.

But —  even more important — we have not seen before such a single gripping and detailed narrative of how Islamists penetrated the Washington Establishment over the last decade. Again, here is the link.

All this reading may seem a great deal to take in about Political Islam and Shariah nationally and in Maryland and Virginia.

While the Left is already allied with those forces, the GOP has allowed its guard to drop. Some on the Right have already sipped the Kool Aid. The forces behind Political Islam, moreover, have substantial financial resources, and well developed political skills.

Which is why we must do our homework and be especially vigilant in protecting, without compromise, our basic freedoms.
