Obamacare: Cloture, Deathcare, Melting Snowe

Getting the United States Senate to vote “no” on cloture for Obamacare is critical in the coming days.

Do not expect the Senate Republican leadership to do all the necessary in-their-face work to stop Obamacare. But our grass roots do give us a fighting chance to help stop Obamacare in that chamber.

As we related on Tuesday – –

Hugh Hewitt asks today in his Examiner piece “Will 2010 voters recall cloture vote? Not if GOP can help it ” – – –“Turning the Saturday mic over to LeMieux [click here for LeMieux Text]is just the latest evidence the GOP national leadership doesn’t understand the seriousness of the vote ahead and the urgent necessity of conveying to the public that the Senate’s cloture vote — the vote on whether to end debate, which requires 60 ayes to pass — is everything in this struggle to preserve American medicine. They don’t get the first thing about how to encourage the public, which is already against Obamacare, to communicate that opposition effectively. ’No’ votes on the final bill or various amendments or at any other time except on the cloture motion won’t tell you anything about that senator’s decision on Obamacare. His or her vote on cloture will tell you everything.” (Underscoring Forum’s.)

But Dan Belz in yesterday’s Washington Post declared here – –

“With the Senate Finance Committee vote on Tuesday, the default position for health care has flipped. From the will-it-or-won’t-it-pass drama of late summer, there is now a growing presumption among Democrats and a number of leading Republicans that Congress will approve some kind of bill by the end of the year.” (Underscoring Forum’s)

We wonder who those “leading” and presumably Senate Republicans are.

Our folks should be flooding our senators with calls, and any other senators to whom we may have connections, conveying one closely-tailored message: Vote no on cloture for Obamacare.

Here is a Human Events link to make it easier to speed our messages.

Is Obamacare Deathcare?

News Busters’ P.J. Gladnick  shows us a video of “Robert Reich Reveal[ing] Brutal Health Care Truths . . .” in September 2007 here – –

“Here is a transcript of the brutal truth about health care as Robert Reich sees it”:

I’ll actually give you a speech made up entirely, almost on the spur of the moment, of what a candidate for president would say if that candidate did not care about becoming president. In other words, this is what the truth is and a candidate will never say, but what a candidate should say if we were in the kind of democracy where citizens were honored in terms of their practice of citizenship and they were educated in terms of what the issues were and they could separate myth from reality in terms of what candidates would tell them:

“Thank you so much for coming this afternoon. I’m so glad to see you and I would like to be president. Let me tell you a few things on health care. Look, we have the only health care system in the world that is designed to avoid sick people. And that’s true and what I’m going to do is that I am going try to reorganize it to be more amenable to treating sick people but that means you,  particularly you young people, particularly you young healthy people…you’re going to have to pay more.

“Thank you. And by the way, we’re going to have to, if you’re very old, we’re not going to give you all that technology and all those drugs for the last couple of years of your life to keep you maybe going for another couple of months. It’s too expensive…so we’re going to let you die.”

“Are you taking notes, Alan Grayson? Okay, now back to Robert Reich and his uncomfortably brutal honesty about health care.”

“Also  I’m going to use the bargaining leverage of the federal government in terms of Medicare, Medicaid—we already have a lot of bargaining leverage—to force drug companies and insurance companies and medical suppliers to reduce their costs. What that means, less innovation and that means less new products and less new drugs on the market which means you are probably not going to live much longer than your parents. Thank you.”

“And thank you, Robert Reich, for revealing the brutal truth about what liberals ultimately have in store for the public with their health care plan. Remember, this is Reich presenting what an honest liberal presidential candidate would say aloud if he weren’t worried about being elected.”

And on the subject of Deathcare, here is the Heritage Foundation’s take today – – “Obamacare Forces You to Fund Abortions” – – on taxpayer support for abortions.

Melting Snowe

Yesterday National Review on Line’s (NRO) Stephen Spruiell here asked – –

“Why did Olympia Snowe vote for Obamacare? One reason could be that Maine has a ‘public option’ insurance plan that is going broke, and state officials are hoping Obamacare can save it . . . .”

. . . . .

“Obamacare would relieve a handful of northeastern states, including Maine, of the burden of funding their broken, heavily regulated and subsidized health-care systems while imposing new burdens on the South and Midwest in the form of expanded eligibility for Medicaid. Of course Snowe voted for this bill. It’s a bailout for Maine.”

RedState’s Erick Erickson sums it all up in simple terms – –

“Pour Rock Salt on Snowe

Posted by Erick Erickson (Profile)

Olympia Snowe has sold out the country. Having been banished to our world after Aslan chased her out of Narnia, Snowe is intent on corrupting this place too.

So we should melt her.

What melts snow? Rock salt.

I’m going to ship this 5 pound bag of rock salt to her office in Maine. It’s only $3.00. You should join me.

It is a visible demonstration of our contempt for her. First she votes for the stimulus. Now this.

It’s time to melt Snowe. ORDER YOUR BAG HERE.

The mailing address is:

Readers will understand this is not simply a matter of voting for an outlandish and perilous measure like the 2008 bailout — as bad as it was.  Senator Olympia Snowe, sailing under the honorable Republican flag, voted against our lives and liberties by helping keep the Obamacare railroad rolling through her Finance Committee vote.  She may have heard history calling, but it was not the history of Maine.

Bottom Line: Keep up the drumbeat. Flood your senators’ offices, or their district offices, or all of them with this simple message: Vote ‘No’ on cloture for Obamacare.

UPDATE OCTOBER 19! WSJ: “Indiana Retailer Gets Spike in Rock Salt Orders – for Sen. Snowe” here. “Erick Erickson, RedState.com’s editor in chief, says he came up with the ploy to express frustration against Snowe for her decision to vote in favor of the Democrats’ health-care and economic-stimulus bills.  ‘What melts snow? Rock salt,’ Erickson wrote last week. ‘It is a visible demonstration of our contempt for her. First she votes for the stimulus. Now this.’ A spokeswoman for Snowe did not immediately return a request for comment. Erickson says he used a similar tactic in January, encouraging readers to send rubber balls to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky ‘to remind him he needed to grow a pair and fight the Democrats.’ About 200 were shipped. ‘We talked to staffers who said they were all generally annoyed but they got the point,’ Erickson says.”
