UPDATED! Scary: Perez’ Overreaching, Missteps; Maryland GOP Endorsers Stay Mum

UPDATE AUGUST 3! Tom Fitton Judicial Watch chief declared today– “The Court’s decision is another piece of evidence showing the Obama Justice Department is run by individuals who have a problem telling the truth.  And it shows that we can’t trust the Obama Justice Department to fairly administer our nation’s voting and election laws.  We intend to continue to push for accountability.  Perez, who gave the false testimony, is a leading leftist at Justice who has taken the lead in the attacks on Arizona’s immigration enforcement measures, attacks on election integrity measures such as voter ID, and the shakedown of financial institutions over dubious discriminatory lending allegations.”

* * * * *

This is the story of an Assistant United States Attorney General from Maryland, Tom Perez and his growing record of menace (see Wes Vernon’s “Thomas Perez: Obama’s one-man Gestapo” in the foregoing link).

It is also about the never-explained (and gushing) 2009 statement of support for Senate confirmation Mr. Perez received here from John Kane, former chairman of the Maryland Republican Party during governor Bob Ehrlich’s time in office; and about another 2009 endorsement for Senate confirmation Mr. Perez received here from the Republican leader in the Maryland House of Delegates, Tony O’Donnell.

Mr. O’Donnell is now also a candidate for Congress in Maryland Five against veteran Steny Hoyer, the U. S. House of Representatives Democratic Whip.

Every time the energetic Mr. Perez moved further toward the authoritarian left, we had hoped that Mr. Kane and Mr. O’Donnell would simply confess error and admit their mistake in endorsing him for Senate confirmation.

After all, we broke the story of their support for Perez in October of 2009.

Was Theirs Just a Routine Endorsement of Some Ordinary Politician?

Maryland conservatives still would like to know why John Kane and Tony O’Donnell endorsed Mr. Perez in letters to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

  • Were they pushed by others in the Maryland GOP Establishment to do so?
  • Why are other Maryland GOP delegates fearful of asking for a public accounting from Mr. O’Donnell?
  •  Why wouldn’t a simple 2009 mea culpa (with the background details, of course) from Mr. Kane and Mr. O’Donnell have cleared up a few moments of bad judgment?

But the veil of silence within the Maryland GOP Establishment on the Perez-Kane letters as well as the unwillingness of the two authors to address their own actions understandably give rise to more serious questions.

This is because Tom Perez, a former Casa de Maryland chieftain, plays a cutting-edge role in the Obama Administration and continues, through his role in the Department of Justice, to endanger what Winston Churchill would call our ancient liberties.

Obama Administration Won’t Promise Not to Criminalize Speech

Baron Bodissey (Gates Of Vienna) revealed last Saturday (see video)

“Congressman Trent Franks (R-AZ, a man I hold in high esteem) questions Assistant Attorney General Thomas Perez about the Obama administration’s commitment, or lack thereof, to First Amendment rights.

Mr. Perez’ appearance is just one of a long series of videos in which the underlings of the Obama administration waffle and weasel their way through congressional hearings.”

Patrick Poole (PJTatler) gave us some background last Thursday on the same Franks-Perez exchange —

“A stunning exchange took place today when Assistant AG Tom Perez of the DOJ Civil Rights Division refused to commit to the House Judiciary Committee Subcommittee on the Constitution that it would never advance a law criminalizing the right to criticize any religion.”

. . . . .

“As Neil Munro at the Daily Caller reported back in October, Perez met with leaders from Islamic organizations who were demanding that DOJ categorize criticism of Islam as discrimination under federal statutes.”

Below is our own take of last December on this world-wide Islamist attack on free speech —

Hillary: Watering Down Freedom of Speech About Islam?

Mr. Perez Apparently Has Trouble Getting His Facts Right

Hans von Spakovsky declared yesterday (PJTatler) in his “Federal Court: DOJ Official May Have Lied About the New Black Panther Case” —

“In a little noted decision on July 23, a federal district court judge concluded that internal DOJ documents about the New Black Panther Party voter intimidation case contradict Assistant Attorney General [Thomas] Perez’s testimony that political leadership was not involved in the decision to dismiss the case.

In other words, the sworn testimony of Perez, the Obama political appointee who heads the Civil Rights Division, before the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights was apparently false.

The decision in Judicial Watch v. U.S. Department of Justice by Judge Reggie Walton was in a case filed by Judicial Watch after the Civil Rights Division refused to turn over documents about the NBPP case requested under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).” (Underscoring Forum’s.)

Heritage Senior Legal Fellow von Spakovsky elaborated  —

“But what is most disturbing about this court order is that it strongly suggests that Assistant Attorney General Thomas Perez essentially lied in sworn testimony. At a hearing before the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights on May 14, 2010, Perez was asked by Commissioner Peter Kirsanow whether ‘any political leadership [was] involved in the decision not to pursue this particular case.’ Perez’s answer, on page 79 of the transcript of that hearing, is an uncategorical ‘No.’ When the statements of Perez are compared to the documents that Judicial Watch forced DOJ to release in the FOIA lawsuit, it is clear Judge Walton was polite when he said they are contradictory and ‘cast doubt on the accuracy’ of Perez’s account.”

Ann Corcoran at Potomac Tea Party Report  has been following the Perez saga for some time.

Here are her comments this morning in her “Maryland’s own US Justice Department contribution, Thomas Perez, caught in a lie.”

And she has an extensive Perez archive.

Blogger Corcoran goes to the heart of the matter when she warns —

“Marylanders, remember all this because you can be sure that when Obama is no longer in office, Perez will be back in Maryland looking for a political perch for himself. “ (Underscoring in original.)

If this should come to pass, we would also ask whether Maryland politicians would once more hold hands with Mr. Perez while the GOP Establishment again looked the other way.
